"Seeing" Molecules Extra Credit Opportunity

Researchers at Ohio State University found a new way to image molecules by firing a laser at the molecule for a quadrillionth (1x10^-15) of a second. This knocks an electron out of its outer most energy level. When it falls back down to the molecule, there is a brief illumination. Based on the scattered image of this crashing electron researchers are able to understand the position of the nuclei of each atom in the molecule and even how these nuclei move before the electron falls back into place.
