Final Study Guide

You can find the study guide HERE.
Or you can just view it below. I will have practice problems for you to try in class on Friday, but you can start reviewing now.

Spring 2012 Final Study Guide
For this final you will be allowed to have one 3x5 notecard or a 3x5 piece of paper along with your periodic table. I recommend reviewing past tests, your notes and the class notes which are available HERE. You can access the website by doing a google search for “Mattys Physical Science.” The notes are available as a google doc or a PDF. Here is what will be on the final. (I hope you learned a lot this semester!)
Mass vs Weight- be able to explain the difference
Classifying Matter- Matter, Pure Substance, Mixture, Element, Compound,

Homogeneous Mixture, Heterogeneous Mixture. (See the notes slide 40)
Temperature- Be able to convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit and Fahrenheit to Celsius
What happens to molecular motion as temperature increases?
Absolute zero, solid, liquid, gas, plasma

Phase Change- What does the graph look like during melting and boiling
What does it mean when the temperature stays the same during
melting and boiling even though you continue to heat the substance?
What happens to intermolecular forces as temperature increases and phas change occurs?
Which substances have greater intermolecular forces?
What is the difference between boiling and evaporation?
Atomic Structure-
Electric Charge-is a property of all matter. Opposites attract. Same charges repel
Electrons, Protons, Neutrons (Which is bigger?)
Nucleus, Energy Levels
What holds the atom together
How are atoms of each element different
What makes an atom complete
What are ions
What is an isotope
Be able to draw any of the first 20 atoms and the number of electrons they have
How do we know energy levels exist?
Understand relationship between energy levels and color
What’s the difference between a mass number and atomic mass?
Periodic Table
Groups, Periods, Metals, Non-Metals, Metalloids, Alkali metals, Group 2 Metals, Halogens, Noble Gases, Transition Metals, Valence Electrons
Physical vs Chemical Change and examples of each
Explain how and why bonds form
Ions and their charge (How do you find the charge of an ion?)
Ionic vs Covalent Bonds (How are they different?)
Be able to draw Lewis Dot Structures for elements. Know the Octet Rule.
Oxidation Numbers, Criss-Cross Method
Polyatomic Ions
Chemical Reactions- Reactants, Products, Yield
Conservation of Mass Be able to balance chemical equations
Types of Chemical Reactions: Composition, Decomposition, Single Displacement,
Double Displacement, Combustion
Exothermic vs Endothermic (How are they different)
Formula Mass vs Molar Mass (Be able to find the Molar Mass of a compound)
Acid vs Bases (How do they relate to the pH Scale)

Project Resources

You can find a number of research resources for your project HERE. (It's a google doc.)

If you need help with the design summary, you can access an outline HERE. (Also a google doc.)
Once you finish your design summary share it with Mr. Mattys at eric.mattys@bvsd.org .

Special thanks to Beth Eldridge for creating these documents.

Chapter 17 Test this Friday!

The Chapter 17 Test will be on Friday, May 4th.
There will be:
-a word bank for fill in questions
       -multiple choice questions
       -three short answer questions
(Be sure you are able to explain the difference between an acid and a base.)

All the essential information on this test can be found in your notes. If you have missed any days of notes you may find all the notes from this semester HERE as a Google Doc.

Go Here to view as a PDF.

Chapter 17 starts at slide 187. STUDY! You can do it!

Chapter 16 Test Tomorrow!

About the test
-All questions will be SHORT ANSWER (no multiple choice)
-You may use a half sheet of paper as a test aid
Key Terms: valence electrons, covalent bond, ionic bond, oxidation number, metal, non-metal, ion, polyatomic ion, Lewis dot diagrams

You may find these terms in the notes here. Scroll to the bottom to see the most recent notes. Chapter 16 starts on slide 155.

"Seeing" Molecules Extra Credit Opportunity

Researchers at Ohio State University found a new way to image molecules by firing a laser at the molecule for a quadrillionth (1x10^-15) of a second. This knocks an electron out of its outer most energy level. When it falls back down to the molecule, there is a brief illumination. Based on the scattered image of this crashing electron researchers are able to understand the position of the nuclei of each atom in the molecule and even how these nuclei move before the electron falls back into place.

Below is an image of molecular nitrogen. I will give 10 points of extra credit to anyone who turns in a half page summary of this article.

Lab Activity for March 8th

Here are the lab introduction notes. (These are not included in the regular notes. The only key term you need to remember is that an Activity Series is a list of elements arranged from most reactive to least reactive.)

Here is the lab worksheet.
